Local History Classes Planned for June and July
The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society announces that it will again offer the popular “Murray on My Mind” local history class this summer. Area residents of various ages and interests have a unique opportunity to learn more about Murray County’s rich heritage.
First taught in 1986, Murray on My Mind takes participants to all parts of Murray County from Tennga and Little Murray to Carters and Bull Pen. Visits to a variety of historic buildings, homes, cemeteries, and sites make the class very popular. Older youth, adults, seniors, and school personnel all are invited to take part. (Professional Learning credit is available for school personnel.)
The class will be offered the week of June 6 with sessions meeting at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church on Elm Street in Spring Place at 3 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. These sessions will end about 8 p.m. with no class on Wednesday evening. The final class will be on Saturday, June 11 with times to be determined by class members.
Participants should bring a picnic supper, dress for comfort and prepare for a fair amount of walking. Space is limited to 25 people. The cost for the class is $40 payable to the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society, 329 Hwy 225 South, Chatsworth, GA 30705. Register at
howardtim@windstream.net. Deadline to register is June 3.
Later in the summer, July 26-28, the Society will also offer “Murray on My Mind Junior”, a camp for students in grades 4 through 8. This class will offer some of the same travel and visits to historic places but also includes hands-on activities including games and such, appropriate for children. More information, registration forms, etc are available on the Society’s website
www.whitfield-murrayhistoricalsociety.org. There will be a similar camp for Whitfield County as well.
